Developing spiritual resilience allows you to navigate life’s challenges with greater clarity, strength, and inner calm. By cultivating awareness and connection to your inner self, you can build a foundation that supports emotional balance and long-term well-being.
What Is Spiritual Resilience and Why Does It Matter?
Spiritual resilience refers to your ability to stay grounded, centred, and connected to your inner self during difficult moments. It helps you respond to challenges with awareness rather than reaction.
We can do everything in our power to build a happy, balanced life, but inevitably, events will happen outside our control. How do you face these challenges? Do you lock up, fall apart or burn out? (maybe all three!) How do we find inner strength beyond just pushing through?
Adversity is the diamond dust that heaven polishes its jewels with – Leighton
I believe we are born jewels, so can certainly shine without hardship, but it is within our human nature that adversity invites growth. This is otherwise known as resilience.
Psychologists define resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of the range of life’s challenges such as emergencies, traumas and threats. This can mean bouncing back from these difficult experiences, but can also be marked by profound personal growth.
Spirituality is acknowledged as a cornerstone of resilience in humanity, researchers use the term spiritual resilience to describe the intersection of how spiritual systems, both internal and community-based, support the path of seeing through hardships.
How can a spiritual foundation help us through trying times? Here are three guideposts to access your Spiritual Resilience:
Foundation of Truth:
When things get hard, it can be tempting to visualize your bad feelings in a pink balloon and send them away. While we do need to create space from negativity, ignoring or dissociating from hard feelings will not help you to move through them.
Confronting difficult truths is an important part of spiritual maturity, and this can be developed when we build a sense of trust within ourselves. Trust is fostered when we know we have a space where we can be honest, no matter how hard the realities we are facing.
The world is full of uncertainty, stability is something you can find within through your connection to the divine. Meditation can help you to develop the courage to see things as they are, before we can move into how we want them to be. Naiveté or avoidance will not build your resilience. Knowing you can and will face the truth will make you stronger and is key to building the strength within.
Know yourself:
There are lifestyle cornerstones to building and maintaining resilience: healthy diet, a good night’s sleep and regular exercise. Beyond that, the nuances of how that looks might be different for me than for you.
One of my touchstones is a walk in the forest with my dog and making sure I have a good laugh everyday. For some people, connecting with a friend or rigorous exercise is a must. The question to ask yourself is – What fills my bucket and makes me feel like me?
Knowing yourself is part of being resilient, so when times get tough you know where to go to get centred.
If you don’t know – meditation is a great way to start. This is how we build a relationship with our inner world, away from the distractions of everyday life. Start with nourishing your inner connection to the self and build out from there!
You deserve Love, no matter what:
If we were to distill it all down, the connection to love is what helps us through adversity. So often the challenges of life can push us on where we feel safe, sometimes they throw us off our sense of self and if we can trust others or not. This is why our connection to universal love is so important – it is the one constant that never dissipates.
Spiritual Resilience is connecting to the Unconditional Love of the Universe, that is always there for you, no matter how ugly or dark you are feeling on the inside.
If you can’t get there yourself, community support can make all the difference. Check out our many courses and resources for tools to connect to the resilience that is there for you.
